PH Artichoke

PH Artichoke - Poul Henningsens masterpiece which is now 40 years old. The structure of the luminaire is built around 12 steel arches. Poul Henningsen placed 72 copper leaves onto this skeleton, arranged in 12 circles with 6 leaves per circle. Each row is offset against the previous one. All 72 leaves therefore cover each other, hiding the light source in the centre of the luminaire. The direct light of the light source therefore only hits the white inner side of the copper leaves, resulting in impressive shadow formations. The light is reflected from the areas which are lit onto the outer side of the leaf below. The extraordinary lighting effect between the inner and outer sides of the 72 leaves and the unique design are the distinguishing features of the Artichoke. The Artichoke was originally designed for the Langeliniepavillionen restaurant in Copenhagen, where these luminaires can still be found today.
